The 5 times table trick
Multiply by 10, then halve it.
- Multiply by 10: 5 × 8 starts with 80.
- Halve it: 80 ÷ 2 = 40.
Examples
- 5 × 8: 80 ÷ 2 = 40
- 5 × 7: 70 ÷ 2 = 35
Why it works
5 is half of 10, so 5 groups is half of 10 groups.

Why do answers in the 5 times table end in 0 or 5?
Every multiple of 5 is half of a multiple of 10. Even numbers give answers ending in 0, odd numbers give answers ending in 5.
