How to use them

  1. Think addition: for 15 − 7, ask what you add to 7 to make 15.
  2. Or count up to the next ten: 7 to 10 is 3, then 10 to 15 is 5, so 8.
  3. Check with the answers at the bottom and circle the misses. Those are the facts to practice tomorrow.

Time yourself with the 1-minute subtraction test, or learn the count-up trick. What's expected by grade: 1st grade and 2nd grade.

Common questions

What subtraction facts should kids know?

Every fact within 20, like 15 − 7 = 8. Under the Common Core, children subtract fluently within 10 in 1st grade and within 20 by the end of 2nd grade.

Why does subtraction feel harder than addition?

Most children learn it by counting back, which is slow and easy to get wrong. Thinking of 15 − 7 as 7 plus what makes 15 turns it into an addition fact they already know.
